About Kids4Kids

Kids4Kids is a non-profit organization founded in Hong Kong in 2008 supported by a group of volunteers who share the same passion for working with kids and a worthy cause.

 

Our main objective is to inspire and empower kids of all ages to make positive changes in the world through their meaningful actions.

 

Kids4Kids first started with “Writing for a Cause” competition to empower kids to take action using their writing skills create a ‘product’ that can be sold to raise funds for charity.

Our Programs

Kids4Kids Books

Through our annual “Writing for a Cause” Competition, kids in Hong Kong are empowered to help other children less fortunate than themselves through creative writing, self-expression and action.

Their work will be published into Kids4Kids Books, which are then sold with the proceeds benefiting our charity partners.

Kids4Kids Outreach

Together with our charity partners, we’ve created regular outreach opportunities for volunteers young and old to be actively engaged in the community and reaching out to other kids through activities that they’re both capable of and enjoy doing.

Kids4Kids Advocates

This is part of our Student Engagement Program that aims to empower secondary aged students to become our advocates.

Our Board appointed Student Representative who represents the voice of the student will work with Kids4Kids Advocates to come up with initiatives and will have the opportunity to lead projects.

Kids4Kids Events

Kids4Kids organizes regular events and activities to promote our cause and fundraise through creative and dynamic ways.

Kids4Kids is a Hong Kong registered NGO with a mission to empower and educate kids of all ages to take responsibility to care for others and for the world we live in. Our programs and activities engage and enable kids, giving them opportunities togive back and be impactful. We believe that kids are our future. So, at Kids4Kids, we let our Advocates- our youth, lead the planning and organization of our programs and activities.

Our 4th annual youth-led Powered By Youth Forum where over 150 students from a diverse group of schools around Hong Kong come together for this 1-day event.
Youth aged between 12-17 years old attending the Powered by Youth Forum have an opportunity to be engaged in a series of curriculum-based workshops, with interaction from inspirational speakers and facilitators. 
At the completion of the 1-day Forum, participants will receive a Kids4Kids Certificate and also a Powered by Service Certification issued by Usher's New Look and Emory University Business School.

Power Groups:

1. Sharing for a Cause Project: You will work with a group of youth from different schools to plan for the Kids4Kids Sharing for a Cause Campaign in 2014, an annual city-wide collection collecting items in need from those with plenty to give to those without . 2. Market Day Project: You will work with a group of youth from different schools to plan for the Kid4Kids Market Day Project in November 2013. For more information, please click here.

3. Buddy Reading Project: Do you enjoy storytelling? You will be trained to become a Buddy Reader. Buddy Reading is our most popular volunteer activity for people who like reading and enjoy sharing the love of reading with local and ethnic minority kids in Hong Kong. For more information, please click here.

4. Social Media and Communications: You will work with your group to learn aboiut the latest trends in social media, and how to use communications to help promote our Cause. Check our facebook page here.
Method of payment
Registration payment can either be made crossed cheque, bank transfer or online by paypal. We do not receive cash on site without advance notice and justification.

BUDDY READING PROGRAM
What?
Since Sept 2010, Kids4Kids Buddy Reading program has been a popular volunteering activity for anyone who enjoys reading and storytelling in English. It is a great way to give back to the community and share your love of reading with another child. Whether you are six or sixty, you can be our Buddy Reader too.
Important Note:If you have not participated in our Buddy Reading Program before, please register yourself at our next available Buddy Reading 101 Induction session.  You will be briefed about this program and be trained with Read Aloud to children skills.  We do require all volunteers to complete the induction session before they proceed to provide their service as a Buddy Reader.

Where?
Changing Young Lives Foundation runs a Learning Centre for children living in Shek Kip Mei, Hong Kong. Kids4Kids Buddy Reading will take place at the Learning Centre on Saturday afternoons where volunteers can read to and read with young children (aged between 6 to 11 years old) living in Shek Kip Mei. The reading sessions will be divided into two parts: Group Read Aloud by our Buddy Reader Leader followed by individual guided reading (1 volunteer to 1-3 children). A Kids4Kids Buddy Reader Leader will be present to supervise each session.
A small selection of colorful children picture books will be available and volunteers are encouraged to bring their own reading material. Please do remember to choose bright picture books that are age appropriate.

HOW TO GET THERE
Student volunteers will need to make their own way to and from the Learning Centre.
The Changing Young Lives centre is situated in the Pak Tin Estate, and you can get there either by public transport or by car. If you are going by MTR, go to Shek Kip Mei station, and take exit A, to the buses, where you will need to take bus 9M. The last stop is Pak Tin Estate.

Thank you for your interest in joining the 6th Annual Writing for a Cause Competition!
 
Before submitting your story, you need to first register by following a few simple steps.
To register and to make the process of your story-writing a fun and easy one, you can make a donation of HKD275 (registration fee plus shipping) which will include the registration fee and submission code for uploading your entry, and a set of 'My Story Kit' - a beautifully illustrated guide book, a blank book made of stone paper to create your own keepsake book, and two Kids4Kids Books from past winners. Or you may wish to donate HKD100 to register and receive the submission code for uploading your entry.          
 
Competition Rules and Regulations
 
  • Eligible participants must be aged between 6 and 16 at the time of submitting their stories.
     
  • The story you submit has to be original, it must not be copied from work of any other person.
     
  • Your story must not include any inappropriate language or violence content.
     
  • You can submit your story in English, Chinese or both.
     
  • The word limit of submission is between 500 to 800 words. It can be written in any style, eg. a poem, a diary, etc
     
  • Each page of the story must be illustrated. Writer and illustrator may be different person. Up to 4 participants including the writers and illustrators are allowed for one submission.
     
  • Illustrations should be submitted in the size of 9x9 inches. Different art styles are allowed, such as hand drawings, computer art, collage, etc. Please do not use color pencils or water color.
     
  • If you wish to also join the School category, to do so, you must submit a different story.

Do you have an urge to scribble stories, doodle pictures and make it into a book? Wouldn’t it be great if your book goes to help a worthy cause when sold?
Kids4Kids Books is launching its 6th Annual “Writing for a Cause” Competition to empower kids through creativity and self-expression, and encourage active engagement to help others in the community and the world we live in.
This year, we are opening the “Writing for a Cause” competition to all kids. Use your writing and illustration talent to help kids around the world. Proceeds from every book sold goes to charity.
您有想過將自己的故事和圖畫出版成書嗎？這不是一個遙遠的夢想，你更可將書本收益捐給慈善機構，成就更多人的夢想。
第六屆Kids4Kids 「為善寫作」圖書創作比賽即將展開，為兒童提供一個創作的平台，激發他們透過寫作和繪畫，表達自己，並付諸行動去幫助社會上有需要的人。

Since Sept 2010, Kids4Kids Buddy Reading program has been a popular volunteering activity for anyone who enjoys reading and storytelling in English. It is a great way to give back to the community and share your love of reading with another child. Whether you are six or sixty, you can be our Buddy Reader too.
Important Note:If you have not participated in our Buddy Reading Program before, please register yourself at our next available Buddy Reading 101 Induction session.  You will be briefed about this program and be trained with Read Aloud to children skills.  We do require all volunteers to complete the induction session before they proceed to provide their service as a Buddy Reader.

Where?
Kids4Kids Buddy Reading will take place at Lok Sin Tong Lau Tak Primary School on Saturday mornings where volunteers can read to and read with young children (aged between 6 to 10 years old). The reading sessions will be divided into two parts: Group Read Aloud by our Buddy Reader Leader followed by individual guided reading (1 volunteer to 1-3 children). A Kids4Kids Buddy Reader Leader will be present to supervise each session.
A small selection of colorful children picture books will be available and volunteers are encouraged to bring their own reading material or borrow books from Kids4Kids office. Please do remember to choose bright picture books that are age appropriate.

This is not an extra-curricular activity. This is an induction program for Buddy Reading Volunteers.
"There is long standing agreement that a major step in children's learning to read is the ability to read fluently, that is, the ability to read aloud accurately, at a conversational rate, with expression. Chall (1996) referred to this as the third stage of reading, coming after children have establihsed concepts of print and know the names and sounds of letters of the alphabet and can decode (or segment sounds and recognize the regularites of the sound-spelling relationship). Fluency is an important step in developing good reading comprehension." extracted from a chapter book, pp 126 called Reading Research in Action. by Peggy McCardle, Vinita Chhabra, Barbara Kapinus.
This session intend to focus on delivering an induction program to all volunteers joining the Buddy Reading Program. The volunteer readers are expected to complete this 2 hours training in order to proceed to offer their volunteer service in our program.

WAYS TO GET THERE
Volunteers will need to make their own way to and from the Be The Change Center.
MTR is the most convienient route as there is an exit right opposite the center.
- Travel to Tsim Sha Tsui on either the West Rail line or the Tsuen Wan line
- Get out at exit H, go up two flights on the escalator which will be situated right in front of you as you exit the station from exit H (Exit H is in the Tsim Sha Tsui station, so if you are taking the West Rail Line and get out at TST East, you must walk to the normal TST station to get to the exit)
- Right opposite you will be Alpha House, you just have to cross the road 
- Once you reach the entrance, walk up the stairs and take the elevator to the 6th floor and the center is right in front

Thank you for your being interested in how to become a volunteer at Kids4Kids, we welcome parents and youths to join Kids4Kids to help others. We do have a number of programs from community service opportunity to empowering youths to create, engage in meaningful activities (such as fund raising, creating arts, writing and recycling).  As a volunteer, you can participate in our activities on an adhoc or regular basis. In both cases, we would require you to sign up.
